Rob Hornstra. “Life Here is Serious”, 2012

We invite you to participate in an intensive two-day workshop by the photographer Rob Hornstra (the Netherlands) in the framework of the festival the Month of Photography in Minsk. The workshop is designed for photographers who have a ready project and look for the ways to promote it.

“Many ambitious photographers are conservative in the presentation of their projects. Often they submit them free of charge in newspapers, magazines or publish in books free of charge. They’re lining up for an expensive portfolio reviews from well-known photo editors and curators in the hope that someone will take their works. They place their fate in others’ hands and wait. But all this waiting is just an unnecessary waste of time. Many people underestimate the importance of the presentation of their own projects. At the same time, the advent of the Internet and digital printing technology has opened endless possibilities”, says Rob Hornstra.

A documentary photographer Rob Hornstra is a pioneer of innovative ways of funding and publication of his own photographic stories. Using examples of his experience you will learn how to develop strategies for the presentation of specific projects. The topics of the workshop include self-publication of books and newspapers, crowdfunding (do’s and don’ts), financing, marketing and distribution of your work, as well as cooperation with designers, photo editors and curators.

Since graduating from Art School in Utrecht Rob Hornstra has worked on long-term projects in his native Netherlands and around the world. He has published seven books with his own works. In 2009, together with a writer and filmmaker Arnold van Bruggen, he started the work on the Sochi Project, which lasted for about five years, and where they tried to document all what was going on around Sochi and in Sochi before the 2014 Olympics. The Sochi Project is a history of successful crowdfunding. Each year the authors managed to collect more than €20,000. In 2012, Rob Hornstra became the winner of the World Press Photo with his Sochi Singers series. Rob will share this experience with you and will teach you to promote projects and to explain to people why it is you whom they should help.
